 .mus to .pdf change???
Author: Roxann

There's a Christmas piece at imslp that I would like to print. I've downloaded it but when I tried to open it, I'm unable. Originally, it was a zip file, which I unzipped. Each instrument's part has its own file. Unfortunately, the file extension for all parts is .mus which I've never heard of. When asked which application I'd like to use to open the file, I have no idea what to choose. Is there any way to change a .mus file extension to a .pdf file extension so that I can open it? I use a Mac if that makes any difference. THANK YOU!

.mus files are Finale files. You might try the free Finale Notepad. Going to PDF is possible with the full Finale version I use either by "printing" to to PDF file or using the export to PDF function. I am not sure that is possible with the free Notepad, but at least it is free.

MichaelW...I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be looking at on the website you posted.

That link is only useful if you have a copy of finale you can use to open the file. It is then telling you how to export a PDF from finale.

It's very rare that there are finale files on IMSLP that don't also have PDFs listed somewhere else on the page. I haven't seen every page on the site so there could be an exception, but maybe double check that you didn't miss a section on the piece's page that has PDFs ready for download.

Short of getting a copy of Finale, those .mus files are useless to you.

I think the first step in each of the methods is the problem - you need to open those files in Finale and then do the conversion. Once a .mus is open in Finale, converting it is trivial. But without Finale, PDF readers (or the reading half of a PDF editor) can't interpret it. The problem that website is trying to solve is the one of sending music that *you've created with Finale* to a friend who doesn't have Finale to read it at the other end. You create a PDF version and send that to the friend.

Roxann, try downloading the free Finale editor John suggested. If it doesn't work, email me privately.

I went back to imslp a few minutes ago and tried to find the .mus files to see if, perhaps there were also .pdf files. Instead, all I found were .pdf files. I deleted all my .mus files and downloaded all the .pdf and now I'm in business! I have no explanation for what happened. It's all a mystery. Thank goodness the problem is solved as nobody in the band (of 50 players) has a new Finale edition. They've all switched to a different program.
