Yamaha 681 and 881 Eb Clarinets

Hi All,

Has anyone compared the above two eefers alongside each other? It is quite difficult to find a dealer who has them both in stock outside of London area. The manufacturers specifications don't really say much about the difference between the two. I would be interested to know what the differences are?

I was wondering that too - apart from the logo, what are the differences?

I had a 681 and at the time (when Yamaha was still in Grand Rapids) I asked the woodwing man, Mike Lutely, what the difference was between the 681 and 881.

I was told the 681 had insert tonehole while the 881 toneholes were integral.
same silver plate, same bore size, wood grade..

regarding intonation, you will not see/hear a difference.

I haven't tried the 881, but I can heartily recomend the 681 II as an excellent eefer. I began playing one this past year for my concert band, and this clarinet plays beautifully. I would get a decent mouthpiece, however; the Yamaha mouthpices (a plastic 4c) is junk. I use a Brad Behn Artist mouthpiece with mine, and get exellent results with traditional Vandoreen 3.5 eefer reeds.
