Hi BBoard,
My teacher has given me several options/suggestions for a solo to work on. I was hoping y'all could give me selection advice/general info/pitfalls about the following pieces:
Debussy - Premiere Rhapsodie
Mozart - Concerto
Spohr - Concerto No. 2
Messager - Solo de Concours
Crusell - Concerto in F

They're all very good, but the one that is becoming really popular nowadays is the Debussy. Lots of my friends are playing that and learning it, and it's a great piece. But all of them are very good and should be learned sometime in your life

The Debussy is my personal favorite, but I worry about playing it because it's not as 'straightforward' as the pieces I've played in the past (Weber).

Jack, I would play either the Debussy or the Mozart. Each is challenging, well written, and well worth listening to. Best wishes.

Then Debussy's the one you should work on, I think--you'll probably learn more from that piece than from the others simply because it is so different.

Spohr has a mess of high notes and fast passages. You need to be very comfortable with the high notes. It's pretty exciting to perform. Some players may opt to challenge the super high notes and drop these notes an octave below. I personally think it's OK to do this.
Debussy is a really nice piece. Take a good look at the last page and see if this something you can handle. It is often asked at auditions for colleges and symphonies. I had to play it when I auditioned for the Air Force band.
It's one of my favorite piece to play. It has a different style with a mess of interesting Whole note scales. I'm not sure if I spelled that wrong. Anyone interested in spelling this correctly I will edit it. My favorate part is actually the opening solo. The piano part is beautiful.
Mozart is wonderful, but way over played.
