 I occasionally hate myself.

Just as I have decided on the keeper of a Bb horn, the one instrument that I've been really seeking for jumps out and stares at me right in the eye. It was sitting at Morrie's, a Leblanc Esprit in C.

I played no more than a minute on it, so that I do not get tempted by that little Siren. My earwax were insufficient to block my ears at all.

Has this ever happened to the esteemed members of this board? I felt driven to commit moves of sheer idiocy such as sending a Bb clarinet straight to a music store to basically pawn it for capital right after hearing that songstress of an instrument.

I feel like a fool...

Been there my friend. Been there. Everyone has a weakness, and it varies with the time of life. Right now, your weakness is clarinets. Mine has been mouthpieces for a long time, and it's now morphing to clarinets.

Yes, I understand perfectly, so now I have an alto sax, a tenor sax, a C clarinet and a couple of Bb clarinets. I think I am through for the day at least.

This effect is like love. It is not limited to music, social status or budget. Pawn something other than your Bb, though.

Loved this. I excuse by book habit by saying:

"Some people drink. I buy books."

Crap. I do both of those, and I play clarinet.

So far, my wife has not asked why I have six Bb clarinets and am constantly looking at more. I guess it could be worse.

I would think that GAS only applies to instruments that you do not use. Having two Bb clarinets, a good one for indoor use, an expendable one for outdoor use, is sensible. If you play both sax and clarinet, having saxes of different sizes is not GAS.

Carol - you need a bass clarinet.

Aha! The first symptom arises - rationalization.

Friend of mine asked me for advice how he should explain to dah missus that he's after a second (!) Alphorn (a carbon version this time).
He's now trying to pull the stunt with "my current one is in Gb, but I need one in F#".

Per the rationalization - I sold a couple of flutes. Problem is, what do I do with that money? Yeah, buy me a Low D extension for my bass...

And yes, Carol, you need a bass clarinet.

I cannot justify having 2x pro Bb clarinet (when I am not even ABRSM lvl 1) at the moment as it is! 1x Bb and 1x C would be more defensible, if only barely.

Regrettably, CSG or the Marigaux has to go, but at least some sense has been slapped to me so that I don't try to completely max my credit card and just grab that Leblanc C horn with blatant disregard to the coffer. It seems that a good night's sleep does wonders for one's mental faculty.

However, I have no success in telling myself to take my mind off to something else. Try as I might, I keep on thinking of that "wouldn't it be nice" jingle in my head.

edit: Alex, you've given rise to an insidious idea...
