Back in middle school and high school I used a student level Selmer clarinet. I haven't played it since but I am looking to get back to playing again. With the current setup the sound is HORRIBLE. There is no way I can afford to purchase a better clarinet, but does anyone have any suggestions to upgrade it to a playable state? Like a new mouthpiece or something? Thanks.

A good quality mouthpiece is probably the best investment you can make. If budget is a concern, Ben Redwine makes a student version of the Gennusa mouthpiece that sells for something like $50. It plays really well. Check the mouthpiece & barrel ads over on the RH side of the screen.

have the instrument checked out by a good tech - fix any bad pads, missing cork, etc.
mouthpiece - fobes 'debut' - about $25
but get the instrument checked out first.; an instrument that hasn't been played in years most likely has maintenance issues that need to be resolved.
