 Upgrade a beginners clarinet?

Back in middle school and high school I used a student level Selmer clarinet. I haven't played it since but I am looking to get back to playing again. With the current setup the sound is HORRIBLE. There is no way I can afford to purchase a better clarinet, but does anyone have any suggestions to upgrade it to a playable state? Like a new mouthpiece or something? Thanks.
