this for all the other high schoolers out there that "try out" for states. (not really a good topic, but it is confusing me). in pennsylvania, we can't just try out for states, least, not within the menc. we have to go through districts, regionals, and then onto states (sadly, i have yet to make any of those). my guestion is if these tryouts are for the Music educators Associations, or if it is just an idividual thing (hope that makes sense).

Well, out here in Colorado we have a few different honor bands. We have "All-State Honor Band" which is done through the University of Northern Colorado. We also have CU and CSU High School Honor bands done through the Univeristy of Colorado and Colorado State University respectivly. Each band is auditioned for seperatly by the staff of the respective colleges. All-State is the most prestigious followed by CU then CSU.

We have both Districts and State and I think they are both run by the same people. Same music for both. You have to make Districts to make State. I think these are for a Music Educator's Association of some sort.

I assume the restrictions (or lack thereof) for all state auditioners have to do with the population of the state. Here in West Virginia, any student grades 9-12 is allowed to audition. It is done through the MENC, and judges are selected by the All-State Chairman (a high school band director). It's not a problem here because we still have only about 1,000 auditioners (and end up with about a 200-piece band).

The PA Allstate festival is directly controlled by PMEA (Penn Music Educators Assoc.) I have really felt that the setup in PA has worked, and it really worked for me when i was in high school, as I got to perform in one allstate fest at Heinz Hall, in Pitt, and another one at the Academy of my Music in Philly. But in truth, the regional band that forms from the surrounding counties of Philly, is better than the all states, which also includes the "rural" regions of the state. THe "T" Theory of pennsylvania is really in effect here

I agree, the PA setup works quite well, as when you get to the All-State level, you know the ensemble is made up of people who have already "risen through the ranks" so to speak, and not just a mishmash group of people who may have just had a really great audition that day...I enjoyed every festival we had, immensely. (I was PMEA District IV...made it to All-State every year, All-Eastern, and Nationals.)
Were you in band, orch, or choir, Rod? (And what year? I was in the orchestra in 96, 97, and 98)

Very good chance we were stand partners. I was principal clarinet of All state Orch in 97, and principal of all state band in 96, i was principal of all eastern orchestra (baltimore year0 which i believe was 97 as well. Do you know me? if so, contact me!

its the same around here in NC. first you have to do All County Honors band which really doesn't do anything to your state audition. Then you have to audition for the district honors band and you have to make a certain chair(i.e Clarinets 1-6 Chair) to audition for all state honors band held at UNC G
