A organizational question for those clarinetists with full-time professional jobs and full-time freelancers. Does anyone have a particular system for managing to get all the excerpt practice in, while maintaining the necessary standards in their on-the-job work. An oboist colleague of mine (who is in a big orchestra) mentioned that she always did 2 hours a day on excerpts, no more, no less and that helped her maintain the balance. Of course, she spends a lot of her other time on her reeds and does not have as many notes in Daphnis! I'd be interested in everyone's particular system whether it be "just get in the time when you can" or something more specific.

every day i try to do some scales, but also some excerpts- i actually make up little booklets that contain orch ex with fast tongueing, medium speed tonging, legato playing and a tricky tech passage.... i'll carry one in my case (change it around every few days) and work on that when i get free time.
most important to always keep your tonguing up to scratch- not just speed but the "medium speed" stuff (beethoven 6 2nd mvt, Beet 8 ). Also, i practise a couple of other 3/8 6/8 pieces from the flute rep to keep my Mend midsum night dream up to scratch (prac similar subdivisions in other pieces so as not to go stale on that particular piece)
for the record, i've won a couple of auditions, but in one case the job disapeared and in another my tone was "not mellow enough" (ie first clarinet player didn't like me). These days i also make sure that every day i find something to be REALLY picky about intonation as when on trial this was an issue. (work on intonation= not just looking at tuner, but using tuner to test your instinct.... play note on piano, play on clarinet.... decide if you're in tune/sharp/flat and then use tuner to verify)
