 Expired Beta Blockers?
Author: Ben
Date:   2005-02-08 17:48

I have a recital this Friday and although I feel pretty well prepared I think I will play better on the 'musician's drug' (based on past experience). I have a prescription for Beta Blockers that expired about a month ago, any ideas what the effects of taking an expired medication could be? Perhaps slightly less effectiveness? Or, does the Gov't just require people to have the prescriptions with exp. dates so they will need to go back and see a doctor again to get re-evaluated every so often? I've taken expired Tylenol before and it seemed okay, but different drugs may be different in this way.

Also, I think I'll try to go somewhere and get the prescription refilled ahead of time if possible, so taking an expired medication would be a last resort. On the other hand, if a prescription expires on Jan 1. 2005, is that suppose to mean it's okay on Dec. 31, but not Jan 1? That would seem a little odd.

I'm sure even the physicians who frequent this forum will tell you to call your doctor. You don't seriously want to be getting your medical and pharmaceutical advice from a clarinet bulletin board do you?

In addition: The pharmacy's info sheet coming with mine mentioned not taking this with grapefruit juice. Grapefruit is supposed to multiply the effect of the medication several times. (I just did some research on this and others in the same class of drugs, and grapefruit is specifically mentioned to be avoided. "The interaction may have dangerous side effects" notes the Yale New Haven Health Library, as do various other sources. The specifics were discussed on the CBC Radio a week or two back during an interview with a doctor being interviewed about drug interactions. This explains why the information sheet that came from the pharmacy said not to combine this drug with grapefruit or its juice.)

Your doctor or pharmacist would be the one to ask about the expiry date.

I don't think that's right ...
But, in any case, let's heed Mark Sloss's advice and refrain from advising Ben. Only his own personal doctor is qualified to dispense medical advice on a controlled substance.

So...

If you take the stuff, and have no side effects, then you'll feel confirmation.

If you take the stuff and end up with a tube in your nose, then someone else is to blame....?

*******

Abuse of Beta Blockers for nerves and performance anxiety will shorten your career and lifespan. If you have a heart condition, you should be tight with your cardiologist.

If you're entitled to a refill, pick up the phone.

If your physician discontinued the scrip, you're WEANED.

I have seen generic propanolol (prototypical beta blocker) tablets physically deteriorate over time.

Also, a friend (who is now a neurologist) took Inderal to prevent his migraines...and he forgot that he also had asthma....guess what happened?
the original beta blockers can trigger undiagnosed bronchospastic disorders.

dizklaimer: this is not medical advice. Yes, I am a doc, but you are NOT my patient....these are just anectdotes. Do with them what you will.

Sounds like there is a beginning of a plot for "Law and Order" here.... or an old Perry Mason: "The Case of the Quavering Clarinetist"

Does Dan Leeson check in on this BBoard?

I've heard that expired cough medicine is a real problem too.

There is a problem with Grapefruit interacting with some medications. Grapefruit juice does interact with a range of drugs by affecting enzymes in the liver, which are responsible for the metabolism of these drugs.
