The high D on my Bb clarinet is significantly sharper than all notes around it. If I tune the instrument to deal with the D, the throat tones go too flat and the high E also becomes uncomfortably flat. It is a new instrument and some of the rings/key heights need adjusting in the near future. Aside from this though, is there any reason for the problem with this D? Without using the Eb vent key the D becomes weak sounding but closer to pitch. Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

I should add, it is quite possible to lip the D down, but can sometimes be tricky because the E above it if anything tends to need lipping up...

Perhaps your throat tone pads need to be raised to bring those note up--I'm currently lowering mine to help bring those pitchs down a bit. In any case, your clarinet sounds like all of mine--except for the flat throats. I just temper the sharp D6 and the flat E6 using the "L & L" method (listen and lip). If you can come within two cents from perfect on your tuning meter, you are close enough for serious clarinetting. AS it is a new clarinet, I would caution against any drastic accoustical renovation--bore or tone hole alteration--until the instrument has been more fully "broken in". During the first few months, the wood does tend to cure and playing characteristic change. On my clarinets, my D & E6 have become much closer and easier to manage over time, but they are still not perfect. So, beyond messing with pad heights, as your clarinet is relatively new, I would just recommend that you keep trying (and tuning) and good luck.
