I recently ordered the Bach solo pieces for Violincello trancribed for clarinet--they are very beautiful and challenging to play. Are there any techniques on clarinet to help approximate the bowing/phrasing that a cellist uses when performing these pieces? (they sound absolutely beautiful when performed on the clarinet).

Hi wjk!
I got intrested about those solo pieces. Can you give me some clarinet pieces that are approximately the same difficulty level as the Bach solo pieces? I hope they arenĀ“t too difficult for me.
Thanks!

The biggest thing about performing the 'cello suites on a wind instrument is the phrasing. Obviously string players can go forever without breathing. We are not so lucky. Most of the same phrasing rules apply that you use for any piece: don't breathe under a slur, don't breathe on a bar line, take your time and emphasize cadences. What I love about performing these pieces is that you can be so free with tempo and note stretching.
Two bits of advice on these pieces: 1. Taper cut-offs and then take your time starting the next phrase. A cello string would still be vibrating, so you have to create that effect. 2. Related to that, really stretch the lowest note in a note grouping. Again, the cello string would still be vibrating as it continued the passage. You have to fool the audience into thinking the note is still being played. Happy practicing. I just adore the Bach 'cello suites, if you can't tell.

I wonder how good the pieces are transcribed, because they had to leave some notes out off the transcribtions, because it is much harder to play accords on clarinet! It seems that they are pretty good despite off that.

Just a minor detail-string players must also breathe, it's just that they don't have to stop playing in order to do so. As a recovery room nurse I get more than a little antsy at the thought of someome not breathing.

I prefer to play the cello suites from the cello score rather than from a transcription. But this only works with a low C bass. For soprano clarinet I use the violin transcription.
