 Reed Playability vs. Strength
Author: Fred
Date:   2004-05-15 02:46

I've started wondering about something recently. Once upon a time, I played hard reeds. I'm now much lazier, and prefer nothing harder than a 3.5. I've got a Morgan RM-15 that I play 2.5's on. It seems like the softer reeds the mouthpiece needs, the less problem I have with reeds.

I haven't been using the Morgan long enough to know that what I'm seeing is a trend that will continue. Has anyone else found reeds more friendly on more open mouthpieces?

Reeds of different strengths play differently on mouthpieces of different specs.

In general, softer reeds will play better on open mouthpieces and harder reeds on closed mouthpieces.

It is not only the mouthpiece that influences the reed's performance, although it is a huge part of it.
Furthermore, what everyone should know is that stronger reed does not equal a better player!
It all depends on the player and their preferences.
I, for example, use a 5+ V12 reed :)
A lot of people when they hear this is very surprised however there is no need to be.
I use a pyne mouthpiece that is fairly open and I have been doing sports for a long time, although I do not anymore.
Also, different companies use different strength markings, as you probabily know already. When comparing the reeds do not just use one reed stregth chart. This is because different charts measure different parts of the reed. It is very helpful to find a few and compare.
However, I tend to try not to think about reeds too much. It can give anyone a headache :)
