I've been looking into buying a new reed case. I've come across the new vandoren reed case (holds 8 reeds) and the Pro Tec. But the catalogs or online places don't seem to have the details I am looking for about those two brands. Can you please offer your input if any of you own these or have seen them.
About the Vandoren reed case-- Does the compartment that hold the reeds stay permanently inside the case or can you take it out (like the Bonazza cases). Can the plastic part that holds the reeds in place hold reeds of varying heel thickness? I owned a Reed Mate case and after putting V-12's in there, it didn't hold down my regular Vandorens--the plastic part seemed to give.
What about the Pro Tec reed cases...does the reed compartment come out or stay permanently in? And what is the material that holds the reeds down, plastic, elastic...? Do reeds with varying heel thickness stay put?
Finally, what is the difference between the 2 besides the brand and how many reeds they hold and that Vandoren has grooved lines for air circulation?
Thank you!

Well, I use a Pro Tec case, so I can tell you about those . . .
It holds 12 reeds, is made entirely out of plastic, and it's best to wipe off the reed a lot before you put it away so it doesn't warp. It holds regular and thick blank reeds nicely, but the thick blank ones will stick out a little bit on the edge. Don't force them in all the way unless you enjoy having a dent on the vamp. The thing that holds the reeds is permanently attached to the case (well, unless you disassembled it . . .). It is a very sturdy case made from hard plastic, so I don't think the case itself would warp unless you left it in the sun for a long time or something.
Also, it has room for holding drying papers, notes to self, etc.
All in all, a nice case!

The ProTec also allows me to fit a couple dozen reeds into the little slot in front of an R-13 case and still have room for a swab and tuner

As far as reed cases go, I have an old Harrison reed case that someone bought me years ago. Now, the reason I like this case (and that I'm telling you about it) is because it holds up to 12 reeds and has a layer of velvet over batting with a raised strip that presses the reeds gently down on a piece of flat glass. Also, when it closes there is the slightest gap between the top and bottom that allows the reeds to breath and dry out. I've tried the Vandy case and all of my reeds warped far worse than the old one so I switched back. ProTec I've not tried.
I don't know if you can still get this same case or not, but I have seen some like them on the market now for around $30...a small price to pay to have reeds that are straight and flat rather than warped and moldy!
Try these sites:

(I do not work for either of these companies. These items are based soley on my research, oppinions and experience.)
Hope this helps!
