 Re: Clarinet Symposium

I'll challenge any Marcellus student to a contest. I trill with the two side keys and they flip. Unless they are trilling flip-style, even those august players have their limitations.

I've known top players who almost never flip and others who think the side keys are mainly for trilling. They are all better than I, so I will not decide which group is more correct. I respect them both.

I was taught early on to use the side keys for F to F#. Later on, I started flipping, just to experiment. It was time well spent - not using side F sharp greatly improved my left hand technique - especially my left thumb. Now I am comfortable fingering both ways and do use either fingering, depending on the situation. For example, in the first 32nd note passage in the pizzicato movement of Tchaikovsky Sym. Nr. 4, I flip every F sharp, in both octaves.
