 The Ethnic Clarinet

Who is reading this board? What kind of music do you play? Where do you play it?
To ante up, I won't ever quit my day job, but typically play in:
1) a commercial Klezmer band (2-6 players), a couple of events per month, and I play perhaps half of them. The other reed guy is a very strong jazz player. I also book my own events (usually clarinet, keyboard, bass).
2) a balkan quartet, that does perhaps 4-6 folk-dance dance events a year (clarinet, accordion, bass/fiddle, guitar/mandolin/tambura/bass/dumbek.) We all sing.
3) a community orchestra, and that also has a chamber music series (4-6 concerts per year total.)
4) a contra-dance band, 7-9 people (typically violin, viola, trombone, clarinet, piano, bass, guitar, dulcimer), 4-6 events per year.
5) other opportunites that arise. The last year had some interesting ones: Opera On Tap (6 players), River Raisin Ragtime Revue (13 piece group), Vocal Arts Ensemble (24 voices).
I use one setup for everything: the same mouthpiece on Bb, A or C clarinets. But, I tend to use softer reeds at ethnic/contra events.

I'm still here!!!
I play in a Balkan dance band (vox/perc, violin, clar/fl/sax, accordion, gtr/mando, bass)!!
I also play in a chamber trio (violin, clarinet, accordion) with two of the same from the above group. We play string quartets and I arrange some music for us from other sources too.

Hello
I'm a clarinet player from Belgium. (also play sax., doublebass, piano, guitar...), have highly demanding job as project manager in the pharmaceutical sector and ... 3 children.
I had to decide to leave the New orleasn jazz band I led in the past (Happy Brothers), as well as another group playing south american music.
Not enough to play so much, but still two activities : gratmoiledo (http://www.gratmoiledo.com) and musician of the singer for children (http://jeanpaulchemin.jimdo.com)

Well, I play what lands on my music stand; I play in a concert band and our repertoire consists of the usual marches and "easy listening" stuff in summer and more difficult to digest classical pieces in winter.
It is *very* difficult to steer a concert band into an even remotely "ethnic" piece. Notable exceptions comprise some local folk tunes and the lone halfway-close-to-klez piece so far. I'm still waiting for 7-40 to magically materialize on our stands. :-/
Unfortunately, as a family father with a completely unrelated daytime job I have no time to - seriously - join an ethnic ensemble, as much as I'd like to. So all I have is a collection of stuff to keep my fingers in shape.

Hey, Ralph:
I play Albert C clarinet (klarino) in my Greek band (also play bouzouki and a couple of other Greek instruments). I sometimes use my A, G, or Bb klarina (in that order), but 99% of the time it's the C klarino.
I have played other Balkan music and some Armenian with colleagues jamming when I've taught Greek dance at various folk dance camps, usually Slavic Macedonian and sometimes Serbian (like with Atanas Kolarovski and Bora Gajicki and Tom Bozigian and Bora Ozkok).

My one ethnic group is a three-piece outfit playing Yiddish, Gypsy, Klezmer and some other eastern European. Instrumention is guitar/voc, clarinet and dumbek [sp?]
I generally do everything on Bb clarinet
We have a steady gig once a month at a local art gallery and a few commerial and club gigs.
Otherwise, I'm a normal, everyday local-yokel reed player /teacher.
