I had a Chalumeau for Christmas but cannot work out how to get a second octave. Any tips? (Chalumeau is like recorder but with a reed, the precursor to clarinet. I have tried pinching the thumb hole to no avail.

I'm pretty sure you're going to have to do that with your embouchure, which won't happen until you get the hang of the basic embouchure. You'll have to tighten it more and maybe "tilt it up." It's hard to describe, but you'll figure it out. Sounds a bit like flute, too.

The clarinet is a good instrument to play But i would suggest to stay away from low notes like F or E if you have small hands. It will be hard to reach them.
