The reed is not only a factor, it's probably the single most important part of the bassoon.

Double reeds (like bassoon and oboe) are far more complex than sax reeds in making, adjusting and playing.

I would strongly recommend that as a begginer on the bassoon you take lessons from an experienced player, certainly for the first few months, in order to establish both good playing habits and an understanding of how the reed interacts with the player and the instrument.

It's infinitely easier to learn good habits than to unlearn bad ones.
