hi im new to these parts - im based in the uk
i am a part time trainee instrument technician (woodwind) and am in need instruments or parts of instruments that have well passed their usable life span or have been severely abused (they know who they are!) to practise/refine my techniques (along side my project pieces) without fear of knackering a playable bit of kit.
some are very easy to come by but some, including oboes are stumping me. ive been scouring ebay, car boots, emailing. short of sorting through a land fill im stuck.
therefore i thought that i would see if anyone here has any ideas - you seem like a friendly lot. answers from the uk would be particularly welcome but ill be gratefull for any responses that i get.

Put a permanent advertisement in the newspaper in the "Musical Instrument" section--"Wanted: old flutes, clarinets, oboes, bassoons" and a phone number.
I'd specify the kinds of instruments, as opposed to simply saying "woodwinds", because not everybody realizes that their battered old flute or alto sax is a "woodwind", and those are the people you want to attract, the people with a kid's old plastic clarinet kicking around the house and they know it isn't worth anything, but they don't know what to do with it.

There was a thread in the ABRSM forum today about all the old junk they have in school music departments, so maybe you could ask the music teachers in the local secondary schools if they have any instruments that they think are beyond repair. If you're very polite and leave your details, you may be pleasantly surprised.
You may be lucky in markets and car-boot sales (yard sales in USA?) but the sellers of most instruments I've seen there are convinced that their instrument is worth a lot, and don't like it when you politely point out that it's an old plastic student clarinet with only half the pads and worth almost zilch!

thanks, i remember at benslow there being several attics full of dusty boxes - and i bet there are spiders. ill write to them and see where i get.
can you point me to that post on the abrsm board, i cant seem to find it...can you give links on the board or tell me the subject title...i have been looking without sucess - maybe i can speak to a few people there

I have found many listings for parts and pieces on the unmentionable auction site. Just do an occasional search for "oboe parts" and you will find batches of broken, worn, and whithered horns and horn parts which can usually purchased at very reasonable prices. I have picked up a good scrap box of stuff in that manner. Eu

result from the local music trust, benslow - i have been gifted a battered old flute...im glad that they didnt invite me to go through the attics - ive always thought that building is way spooky.

With regard to the unmentionable auction site, as well as estate sales, etc., it is worth remembering that uninformed sellers/inheritors may misclassify items beyond all recognition. If you're looking for oboe parts, search also through flute, clarinet, sax and even trumpet listings periodically. And, don't just look for "oboe parts," but also "oboe lots," "fixer-uppers," "oboe pieces" et. al.
In moderately large cities, pawn shops may also be a viable alternative. If you go to such a shop where employees are perhaps not musical specialists, you may find a hidden treasure in the midst of a stack of junkers or CSOs ('clarinet-shaped objects".)
