I'm not a player of double reed instruments, but my good friend Jane is.
She told me last year that owning an English Horn would 'complete' her life!
Well, this was a challenge for me.... I have a knack of looking for instruments and finding them.
I did find her an English Horn. An older F. Loree instrument. As soon as we got physical possession of it, we took it to the renowned C. Robert Scott woodwind tech, who lives close by to me. He has been repairing woodwinds since the 1960's. After he did the work to put it in great playing condition he told us he had never held a double reed in his hands of this age before.
In his typical manner of understatement, he said that, "It plays pretty well." A huge compliment from him. He suspects that Francois Loree may have worked on this one himself. From what I can tell it would have been produced around 1890, give or take a few years. Serial number is G83.
Great fun and Jane is very happy.
