To Chris,
The S55c is BEAUTIFUL. The sweetest tone and most forgiving instrument i have played in my entire life. It makes me want to sell my Loree! But the downside of it, as with some Marigauxs that i have played is the resistance. I feel that i can play small, but never big enough. And the resistance is quite high from what i am used to. From the way you put it maybe this instrument needs an adjustment for me to really judge, but i am now practising 4-5 hours everyday and it works just fine, except for that terrible altissimo (Makes sense to me now why they are flat!).
This oboe is slightly heavier than my Loree but it's keywork layout feels more ergonomic for my Asian born hands which is quite a surprise for me! (I rather like how the C key is places beside the Eb which allows a smoother transition for sliding, although the low Bb is way too far for me to reach comfortably.) The scale is excellent, low G is just right and middle E is not sharp as on my Loree. I might even consider a Howarth is the future, due to the functionality, but i just find the tone a bit too sweet and not robust enough. MAYBE, who knows?
Howard
