Wine making is a great metaphor for reed making, I think.
I actually think of my cane supply as a wine cellar and know each source for its subtle difference from others. Some I've had for over 20 years, most over 10, and the imputant new stuff 1 - 4 years gets me excited then tends to disappoint with its finish. (Foolishness of youth, I guess)
I probably could not tell a decent box wine from somethng considerably better, but I would bet I can play one of my reeds and tell you its vintage
(cane source, year, tube diameter.)
I tie a different thread to color code the various sources, so I'd have to do the test blind-folded.
And I tend to think reeds in terms of of 'red wine' with its varieties to characterize my cane... some merlot (a touch of earth), some cabs... (livlier overall), some with legs, some without, etc.
Ideally, I'd retire and buy a piece of land that would grow both grapes and decent cane. I hear properties in the south of France are somewhat affordable.
