Yeah, I've got printouts of several of those discussions upstairs in my collection, and I've pretty well worked my way through most, if not all, of the recommended reedmakers. And I've got reedreviews bookmarked, too, although it's dismaying to find that sometimes the reed you're interested in doesn't have any reviews posted for it.
Ebay can be really a mixed blessing--if you know what to look for, and how to shop, you can get some good bargains. But for the complete novice, it's a scary minefield.
I realize it must have sounded pretty negative, but I wasn't intending to give her a list of recommended reedmakers, because as you point out, we've discussed them many times, and a Search turns them up right away. I was just hoping to steer her away from some of the more blatant mines, if she hasn't already gotten stung.
Which I hope not. But if she has, well, it's not the end of the world. And I've certainly gotten my share of dud mass-produced reeds upstairs in the "Inactive" box. What's the saying, about needing to eat a peck of dirt before you're 10 years old or something? Like, oboists need to collect a peck of dud reeds before they can really call themselves an oboist or something? Heh.
