If you just want an MP3 player, the industry has now progressed far enough beyond the "rich man's toy" stage and is far enough into the "rapidly becoming a home appliance" stage, that you can basically just walk into Wal-Mart and ask the Electronics guy to point you to a selection of MP3 players. Then pick the one that suits your budget. The biggest difference is mainly in how user-friendly the instructions are, especially when it comes to moving tunes around between your computer and your MP3 player. For example, the Made-In-China rock-bottom El Cheapos tend to have mystifying instructions poorly translated from the Chinese.
Whatever you buy, save the receipt, and take it back if you can't figure out how to get it to work right. This would be a good reason to buy it from a reputable seller like Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, Circuit City, or Amazon.com, as opposed to someone on eBay.
