Once my cane is split and gouged, I let it dry. Then, I begin the part that interrests you! I shape and tie in the same session. Once I have the blank, I give it a rough scrape (5x on each side on all the length, to have a rough spine, then 10x on each side of the tip). Then I cut it and let it dry for few days. I usually tie 8-12 reeds, to have lots of blanks on hand. Starting from a blank, I usually work for about 15 minutes, play the reed a bit (a few long tones and scales), let it aside for a day or two, then try it again and put the finishing touch to it (probably another 5-10 minutes). As another contributor wrote in a previous post, I also can scrape all in the same session, but the reed dies faster, and with 7 perfomances/week, I like my reeds to last for more than one night (usually 2 or 3, but it went up to 5 with THE_GOD_GIVEN_REED, the one I was waiting for for the past 15 years!).
I still spend about 45 minutes per day on reed, making sure I have a good rotation in my reedbox.
