Although my reedmaking luck has not yet been exceptional with Mark Chudnow's all-metal oboe staples, I offer a quick note about his English horn staples: EXCELLENT. I have found them to have very consistent dimensions - both for fit on my mandrel and for fit on my bocals. I have had excellent luck in making EH reeds with his staples - good tone, good response, good intonation, excellent rich, singing sound with both of my Kreul English horns.
I will be ordering a few more dozen of Mark's EH staples soon, and will probably get a few more dozen oboe staples so I can give them a really good try. By the way, Mark's all-metal oboe staples are also THE most consistent oboe staples I have ever encountered: I have not had any misfits on a mandrel, and therefore, accoustically I expect that they should perform identically. Incidentally, Mark makes his staples using a CNC (computer-controlled) lathe, not the traditional method of wrapping metal around a mandrel and soldering the seam. Hence his consistency.
For your interest, with Mark's EH staples I use a fairly narrow EH reed shape, tie on with 31.5 mm blade length protruding, and have a final reed length of 54 mm with 11 mm entry onto Fox XP bocals. I use a generalized American scrape to get a slightly rattley crow and never use wire or goldbeaters skin.
Cheers!
