Well, that is an interesting thought. I think there is also a converse effect of the digital recording technology.
I do a lot of up close recording of oboe and english horn and having the mic 3 feet away produces a very different sound from a mic 10 -15 feet away with other things being the same ( room, weather, reed...).
Knowing my sound will be processed somewhat with eq, compression and a few other tricks, I find I go for a slighty different sound for up close recording than I would in concert or for recording with an orchestra in a conert setting.
Feedback from many tries and being in the room while mastering is taking place has taught me or given me this perspective.
The funny thing/hardest lesson was learning to accept the different up close sound I need produce to get a good tone onto the recording.
The difference is a bit more 'brightness' on the low end of the range, almost a hint of growl. The compression smooths it out.
And the compression will also wreck a beautiful unadorned sound when it gets used. ( And these days, it almost always gets used.)
