re: smaller openings . . .
If reducing the sides is not working, try larger diameter cane or putting less cane on the tube. I would immediatly try putting less cane on the tube since that is comething that can be tried on the very next reed you tie up. What shape are you using? Robin uses a Jeanne standard with Sierra staples. I for one cannot use the Sierra staples as I have to tie them incredibly long (73 or so) to seal. I prefer, as JM did, to put more cane on the tube so where it comes off the tube it's pretty wide. The Loree AK staples are phenomenal (with my AK oboe )and with my Opus1 measurements at about 60/61-43/44/45 on 10.25-10.5 cane, my openings are not Mack huge (my mouth is too small for that) but not collasping either. On a previous Opus1 curve, my measurements were in the 46-47 range on the sides and the openings weren't gigantic either. Opening is controlled by many factors, not just the gouge, as I'm sure you know.
I have always played on "Mackish" reeds since every person I've ever studied with was a CIM grad but I am not built like he was. I aim for the ring in his sound and also the smoother qualities as well as some "darkness" (such an ambiguous (sp?) term!) but have always naturally had a "lighter" sound due to my physical traits (smaller lips,etc.). I find that as long as the reed isn't collapsing on me, I can get along just fine.
About Robin on the phone. . . he is really good at email and also has a video camera that he can use to walk you through things or show you. You might be able to talk to him via internet if possible. I'm fortunate to live in Cleveland so I just drive on over when I need something.
Also, about the pricing you sent out for gougers. . . what is the additional cost of getting most of the machines set up? I'm just curious since I've never looked into any machine seriously since I like the Opus1. Just curious, although maybe we should start a new thread on gougers if it keeps going like this. Thanks for your reply.
