Everybody wants to play for a top notch orchestra! what about ballets or Operas. Those are great to. Why don't people ever talking about winning those, there are other jobs out there for oboe players besides orchestras!

The Dallas Opera pays a bit over $16K / year. Not enough to do much of anything on.
