"Howard, one thing you could do as an experiment is make and add a thumb button (as on saxes) to the back of your oboe, made in the same shape as a thumbplate (a 19mm x 12mm oval with a bevelled edge) made from thick cork or similar to a thickness of about 2-3mm in the middle (standing slightly higher in relation to the tip of back 8ve key when the back 8ve key is held against the body), with an almost flat top side, attached to the body with a very narrow gap between it the back octave just to see how it feels to roll the thumb onto the back 8ve key. Look at the pictures on Howarth's site to see the position of the thumbplate to get an idea what to aim for if you want to try this out."

You gave me a great idea! Shall try this out!

I don't want to misunderstand here but i guess Holliger isnt a good representation of general oboe playing Europe. Haha...he managed to split out from the French school that he came from but wasnt sucked in to the ever so frenzied influence of the American school at that time. But sure, his Strauss recording is crazy. I remember that recording well (also the 2 cd version from Philips) as he did not use the De Lancie edition but the original one where there wasnt any chance for good breath marks, which was crazy! The Edo de wart recordings with the Netherland's wind ensemble is truly outstanding! Especially the Strauss works, and also the Mozart Serenades and Rossini transcriptions if you can find them or most probably have already heard of. My teacher, from the Dutch school and a former student of Han de Vries influenced me to listen to those and i was in total awe the first time i heard them.

Ironicly, in total desperation =), my teacher recently asked me to focus on placing the reed on the upper lip when i was often taking in too much reed. I find it really helpful for piano playing! (Yes same experience here!)\

The late Anthony Camden i think came out of the bunch, because he definitely sounds darker and heavier to me than the other oboists of the same period. I remember his Corelli concerto, where the first low F in the first phrase of the 1st movement was in my opinion not executed well compared to De Vries or Rothwell in that matter. But still he was a great teacher and a great musician and i regret not being able to have a chance to see him play before he passed away.

Such diversity in playing styles and concepts of teaching. Ain't this board great!!!

Very honoured Howard
