Hello all!
I bought a second hand Howarth S2 oboe D’amore from 1982/3 earlier this year and it came with one TWH no. 1 crook. I am looking at getting another and am seeking some advice before I do so, I’m terms of brand/materials.

The first question is "why do you want/need another crook? (tone is bad, pitch is sharp, the scale is off, some notes sink, altissimo register isn't responsive., etc.) Then try crooks that might be able to solve your problem.
You will likely have to choose from Hiniker, Loree, Howarth, Marigaux, and Laubin (if you can find one). Hiniker offers the greatest variety in terms of lengths and diameters.
If I were you, I'd try as many crooks as I can from wherever you can find them before choosing the best one for you. Most double reed vendors will send crooks for trial. The process will take a few months and could cost you a few shekels in shipping charges, but it will be worth it because nothing ruins the experience of playing Cor or d'Amore more than a bad crook. I'm guessing that you're in the UK, because much of the rest of the world refers to them as "bocals," so you might locate more resources if you use that search term.

Hi there
Yes I am in the UK, so Howarth/Crowthers are the best places. I think the tone and how the staples fit could be improved (alternative staples, or reeds as I don’t make mine, or some PTFE tape) and the altissimo has some tuning issues. The scale is fairly even, which is helpful!
I might take a trip into Howarth as I’m quite close to London, but will check what they have in stock before I leave. I’ve heard some positive things about crooks in gold, in terms of warmth of the tone.
