Ab-Bb trill using RH side trill key?
Author: mberkowski

Hi all - according to the trill chart https://www.wfg.woodwind.org/oboe/ob_tr2_1.html it may be possible to trill Ab-Bb using the side trill key that curls over the RH G# key by fingering Ab/G# and trilling the side key.

This has no effect on either of my full conservatory instruments (Covey classic and Selmer Signet), as that key only affects the RH3 finger plate and slightly lifts G#, though I can use that side key to trill G#-A by trilling LH3 on both.

Can anyone explain on what types of instruments that Ab-Bb trill is achievable using the RH side trill key? The chart notes "For open-hole models" on the fingering above it, but that doesn't seem to apply to the one below as well. (if it does apply below, that basically answers it)

Thanks

Michael

That's one of the fingerings that I believe to be less than accurate on that website.

I have seen and played on some older instruments (50 years ago) that had no G#/A trill key on the right, but in its place was a special Bb trill key that was connected to its own vent on the side of the instrument (very similar to a trill key on a clarinet).

The bottom-most fingering shown on the website is mislabeled "A," when it should read "Bb" because of the special key described above. I believe that the special Bb trill key was mostly on open-hole models.

In addition, I have never heard of adding any right hand keys when trilling Ab to Bb on a modern instrument. (upper-most fingering shown)

The upper side key on ring key conservatoire system (and on some student model covered action) oboes is for the Ab-Bb trill. Play Ab (G#) as normal and trill with the upper side key. That same key can also be used for altissimo F# along with the altissimo F fingering - just like adding the side Bb key on saxes to get F# along with the front F fingering.

On intermediate and pro level oboes with covered or Gillet conservatoire system, you have a link from the G# key to hold down the LH2 fingerplate so you can play that trill by fingering Ab and trilling with LH finger 2.

The upper side key on intermediate and pro level Gillet conservatoire system oboes is the G#-A trill - hold it down to open the G# key and trill with LH finger 3 - the hole in the LH3 fingerplate makes sure the A is in tune.

On thumbplate systems you can use the Barret side key for the Ab-Bb trill.

Thanks - this confirms that Ab-Bb trill fingering as listed does not actually apply to Gillet conervatoire instruments.

I was in a band where there were three oboes - all Howarths, but an S2 XL (thumbplate system), S3 (ring key conservatoire/dual) and my S5 (Gillet conservatoire/dual). So all of us had to use a different fingering for the Ab-Bb trill that cropped up in one of the pieces.

Thumbplate system - xxxG#|ooo trill with side key
Ring key conservatoire - xxxG#|ooo trill with upper side key
Gillet conservatoire - xxxG#|ooo trill with LH finger 2

The oboe featured in this topic has plateaux keywork and also the side Ab-Bb trill key:

It does not look like a side Ab/Bb key. The adjustment screws look to be that of a modern G#/A trill mechanism.

It won't work as a G#-A trill as there's no perforation in the LH3 fingerplate.

It's difficult to see from the angle of the photo, but you can just make out the side Ab-Bb key arm with the arch on it which leads to the pad cup (marked with an arrow).
