Single or double radius gouger for the inexperienced?

Hi all,

I mentioned in an earlier post I am strongly considering getting a gouging machine this year. While I make a low volume of reeds only for myself, I have had a hard time sourcing consistent gouged cane and am hoping to eliminate the gouge as a variable - otherwise I would not be interested in the expense and added labor.

My last teacher mostly used a Ross machine, and prior teacher used a Graf machine. I have only limited hands-on experience with the Ross. Whatever machine I get will probably be the only machine I ever buy unless parts replacement & maintenance become impossible.

I feel like I have a good understanding of the mechanical differences and flexibility of adjustment differences between gouge radius types and understand why players would select a double or single radius (Threads like this one have been really informative http://test.woodwind.org/oboe/BBoard/read.html?f=10&i=18591&t=18591)

For a practical choice though (not a single/double flamewar [wink]) - assuming this is to be my only gouger, and I will probably not often spend a lot of effort fiddling with it much once I find what works for me and my shapes, do you think you would choose a single radius for ease of use & possibly simpler setup & maintenance now or a double radius machine for more flexibility I might decide I need years later?

Whatever I get, I don't plan on going it alone with setup - I'd have a professional maintain the machine and I have a nearby university oboe department to go to for usage advice.

Addendum: I don't play professionally and use American long scrape reeds

Michael

As luck would have it, Pierre Roy just published a great comparison on YouTube, showing how you scrape the different gouges.

Ha! I am actually halfway through watching that video as I type, as it reminded me to return here and check for replies to this thread.

Roy's single radius gouger has been available for a year or so and his double radius for half a year or less. Has anyone around here tried either of his new machines yet?
