 Homegrown methods for cane guillotining?
Author: mberkowski

I've never owned my own gouging machine, but in preparation for getting one later this year, I've started collecting some of the other requisite cane processing and measurement tools. In videos, I've seen all sorts of micrometers used for thickness measurement, including even screw-type lab micrometers and mass-produced digital ones. For splitting cane, in addition to the purpose-designed tools, I have seen individuals split cane free-hand with a razor. I've seen a home built frame with a groove routed out to use a small carpenter's block plane for planing cane.

But what about a guillotine? I have not encountered any inexpensive replacements or workarounds for trimming cane to length, and if not integrated into the gouging machine, a standalone guillotine seems to be really expensive for its relative simplicity, $250-$400 US. Does anyone have an unusual method of trimming gouged cane without a real guillotine that avoids splits?

I am not trying to avoid spending money on the correct tools. Just more as a curiosity.

Michael

Michael, I would actually suggest getting a gouging machine that has an integrated guillotine - It would certainly save the expense. They are certainly an invaluable tool.
