dear oboists,
While vacationing in France I obtained an old Lorée oboe, from the AA series. The keywork resembles that on the thumb plate models from about a century ago, but this oboe lacks a thumb plate! The C and Bb are fingered by touching a side key with the right hand (like on Triébert system 3-type oboes), although one side key controls both notes. Did Lorée (or anyone else) make more models with this keywork? was it a transition between 19th-century systems and the thumb plate oboe? Any information you can supply concerning this curious instrument will be much appreciated!
thanks and best wishes
Kevin

That's the Barret side key which is a single key for both Bb and C which replaced the two separate side keys for Bb (lower) and C (upper).
It's in essence Triebert's Systeme 4 with a Barret side key and as you rightly said, it's a transitional model.
Adding a thumbplate to it will turn it into Triebert's Systeme 5 which is what is commonly known as thumbplate system - the side key springing will have to be reversed so the Bb and C keys remain open, then the thumbplate will have a stronger needle spring to push the clutch up to hold the pads closed while the thumbplate is held down, but will still allow the side key to be used for trilling.

Thanks for the prompt reply and useful information, Chris! The Loree still plays very well, except for a few leaky pads. Now I will have to retrain myself to use the Barret key.
best wishes

A representative of the Lorée company verified that the oboe in question was made in 1910, and is a "modèle A5". Is anyone familiar with the early Lorée model numbers, and how they correspond to the Triébert system numbers?
thanks again,
Kevin

Not sure why anybody who is serious about the Oboe wants an instrument that is 100 years old...other than one can't afford anything better...
