 oboe end caps

What are the endcaps for on the oboe - is it to protect it when shipping it ?

They're usually included to keep the tenons and the case lining clean.

They also serve to add more stability to the joints so they won't shift around in the case and some are even designed to keep the top joint Bb and C keys and the C-D trill keys held open to let any water dry out.
