Oboe at the office party? Forum, help!
Author: rgombine

Word is out at work that I play the oboe (it’s taken them about 20 years to discover this) and so last year I did some guitar/oboe Xmas music stuff for the office party. The poor schlump who played guitar has since quit but there is still a clamor for me to Play. I don’t think this crowd is going to get much out hearing me play Metamorphosis (“it’s the clarinet, right? Oh yes, oboe. “)... sooooo any suggestions? Thanks!!

I face a similar situation where I have been requested to play some Christmas pieces for a exercise group that I am at frequently. They have asked another person to play with me but we have not even heard each other and there is little time left.

This is the time it'd be handy to have a few of those Play-along Guest Spot 'minus one' books and an ampifier to play the CD that comes with the books. You'd have to use the Flute versions if you're going to use Oboe.

Actually, the mini concert for the exercise group went well. I played some tunes on the tenor sax and improvised a few choruses. Tunes were Watermelon Man, Sweet Georgia Brown, God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen, and Joy to the World. No sheet music and no faking on the Christmas tunes. The other gentleman had his own program on his soprano sax. They have requested a spring concert.

You could start looking for another job or just explain the instrument to them.
