 Double Geek Universal Tool
Author: Barry Vincent

I recently noticed (via a friend) the existence of a peculiar tool thats not a reed knife but is. It's the DoubleGeek Universal Tool which is being offered as an alternative to the traditional reed knife. I've found four Utube videos demonstrating the use of this tool on Oboe reeds. My conclusion after watching these videos is that this tool has potential for being used as a 'finishing off' tool but not very practical for scraping an Oboe reed in the initial stages of shaping. I'd like to hear what the consensus is amongst my fellow OboeBB members as to how practical and usful this tool is. As for me I rather enjoy using a traditional cane knife. I also find it relaxing as I whittle away the cane in the early stages of Oboe reed making. And I also find it enjoyable to use a traditional knife in the finishing stages as well. So the question is , for me anyway. Is it worth the expense of getting the DoubleGeek Universal Tool just for finishing off reeds.
You can watch the four videos on my FaceBook (Barry John Vincent)

I use one and quite like it.

The biggest advantage is portability: I can pass through TSA lines without issues.

It has 4 or 5 sharpening ridges, each shaped differently for different kinds of adjustments....I use it a on my sax and clarinet reeds as well.

I don't make reeds any longer and if I did, would use a knife...this is best for adjustments on the fly.

Yes. It seems the consenus of opinion is that it may be Ok for finishing off a reed even though one said that because of the bulk of the tool it's difficult to see what you are doing. This was from an earlier thread on this BB. It has to be bulky for the weight which is part of the feature of this special tool.
