Hello, folks. Loree offers a horn that plays to a low A that I am curious about. Would the extra wood/length affect tuning or tone of the higher notes? Is the extra added weight an issue while playing?

And if anyone has one, could you measure the length of the lower joint (in millimetres, including the tenon) and the distance from the end of the tenon to the centre of the lowest pad cup on the lower joint as I want to make a removable low A extension for my oboe.

One might expect that there are some changes in the oboe's performance in some upper parts of the scale. A repair person at a Loree dealer seemed to agree with this while discussing the low A Loree oboe when I commented on it. I found that to be so when I made an English horn extension to low Bb to allow playing of a Mahler piece. It played the low Bb fine but I preferred to remove it soon after the passage was over when I used it.
Yet, Loree might put extra effort into a low A oboe to make sure that it played well.

The extra mechanism would definitely shift the balance of the instrument.

With the added length and weight of the bell, the entire oboe becomes a little more resistant. The high register should mellow out and be slightly flatter in pitch, which might be a good thing.
Yes Izotov plays one. I believe he got it around early 2015. You can email him to ask what he thinks about it, he's very responsive and helpful to my emails. It's izotov(at)gmail.com.

Another player who's used a low A oboe exclusively for the past few years is Alison Lowell. She blogged about her oboe at http://loboeproject.blogspot.com
