Hi Alan, basically you read the chart from left to right (think of your oboe laid down on its side in front of you so the top joint is on your left and the bell is on the right), so x means closed and o means open and ½ means half-holing.
So the first three characters (x, o or ½) represent the left hand (or LH) fingers 1, 2 and 3.
The | is separating them from the right hand (RH) fingers which are the next three characters representing RH fingers 1, 2 and 3 (x or o).
So G is notated as xxx|ooo which is all three LH fingers down and all three RH fingers raised. F natural with the forked fingering is notated as xxx|xox and the key F fingering which I notate as xxx|xx,o.
Low C is xxx|xxxC, low B is xxxB|xxxC and low Bb is xxxBb|xxxC.
