 Dorati "Cinq pièces"

The piece called "Berceuse" in Dorati's "Cinq pièces" for solo oboe has the instruction "con sord."

Do people play it with a mute, and if so what do they use?

I've seen people do this with their swab pushed into the bell. If you leave the tail hanging, it is easy to pull out quickly.

I've done it with a swab, but experiment with materials - tissue, cotton balls, etc. Every different item will give you a different result, both in resistance and in sound. My favorite mute was made for me by a friend - 2 cosmetic wedges glued together and dyed concert black.

Best,

Jennet

I have a short square length of foam, roughly 4x4x10cm, which I can shove partially in the bell and remove easily. Works a treat. I used it when playing 2nd Ob. in one of those Dvorak works where he expects Ob.2 to play silently at the bottom of the range ..
