Again I hope he makes a full recovery.

I'm just wondering if this will compromise his career as an oboist - could being an oboist be the main cause or a contribution to this?

The discussion as to whether or not playing oboe can harm one has been covered in depth here. If one doesn't know how to breathe correctly, yes, playing can create problems. But this fellow is a career oboist, and it is unknown as to whether or not he had some hidden problem (i.e. a brain aneurysm) or high blood pressure or other risk factors. I think we as a group should avoid further speculationa and send him good thoughts / pray for his recovery so that he can spend his life in quality and playing again.

Although I've never had the pleasure to meet him, I always admired his work. This is very sad news.

Indeed. On the other hand, I wish I would die while doing what I love. I envy him immensely.

Bittersweet gratitude, there. May we honor his memory by playing better, with our hearts and 'our boots on'.

For a limited time (until March 25th), KDFC is streaming online Bill's previous Richard Strauss concert which originally aired on the 5th March this year.

You can hear it online here.

The file is large and so it may take a minute or two to load, depending on your connection.

Sorry to resurrect a sad thread, but I thought some might be interested in William Bennett's family history, which I just learned about, by chance.

Mr. Bennett's father was a passionate and very accomplished amateur clarinet player. He was also a distinguished professor of physics at Yale. There are warm stories about his love of music in this link, and elsewhere on the web:

https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2008/09/08/physicist-bennett-dies/

Mr. Bennett's sister Jean Bennett has garnered great acclaim recently for her pioneering and successful work on gene therapy. (Just Google if you are interested.)

A remarkable family that has shown the fruits of passion and commitment, regardless of the field.
