 Marigaux Cases

I recently got my Marigaux 901 serviced for the first time. It's eighteen months old, and this was the first chance I'd had to get it looked at. One of the things I'd had a problem with was my bottom B flat. There was clearly a problem with the mechanism, as I could see that the key wasn't sealing a certain pad properly.

It's working perfectly now, for which I'm very grateful, but the repairer thinks that the problem may have been caused, at least in part, by the Marigaux case, which fits too snugly around the instrument. It had pushed the B and B flat keys too close together. He has altered the case a tiny bit to try to reduce the problem, but he says that it's a known issue with Marigaux cases and suggests using a different one.

I was wondering if anyone here knows any more about this problem. Is it common and is there anything I could do to fix it? If not, is there a particular type of case you would recommend me getting? I have a lovely Bam double case, but that's rather bulky, and I'd rather not have to use it on occasions when I don't need my cor.

Thanks in advance,

Sophie

I am using a Marigaux case, albeit for my 2001, so I don't know if the case is different or whether the slightly different keywork makes it immune to that problem. The B/Bb keys are quite close to the hinge of the case. Don't know if it is more/less so for other cases/instruments. I've never had a problem with those keys, not even when I dropped the instrument in the case (it did bungle up another key, though).

I have a thumbrest which I am too lazy to take off so that joint actually sits a little higher than it should in the case. No negative effects so far. On the contrary, I am more cautious with it when I put it in the Bam double case. I have to take the thumbrest off, then, or it'd sit way too high.

The padding between the velvet and shell in my case right above the B/Bb/F cluster is gone. Might be an indication that the cluster is very snug to the case and pushed away the fluff. I wonder if holding the case often by the handle exacerbates the pressure on the cluster. I almost never carry my oboe that way. It lies straight-up in my bag and is flat while in storage.

That's all very interesting -- thanks for sharing. It's good to know you haven't had any problems, and I hope it stays that way. I do carry the case by the handle fairly regularly (although not usually for a long time) so maybe that's made it worse for me. I'll try keeping it flat as much as I can and hope for the best. Thanks again!

I have my 901 in its original case. I have never had a problem with it, although I have a rather bulky thumb rest cushion which may be propping it up.

The only time I did have a problem was when the oboe, in the case, was knocked from the top of a filing cabinet and landed on the floor (along with my heart). The only damage? The Bb and B keys bent in. So maybe there is something in it.

In terms of cheaper cases, I have used the ProTech and Gator cases successfully (I particularly like the Gator case, I believe they are only around the $40 range). The single Bam cases (both the lightweight and the standard ones) are so light and compact, although I haven't used one personally, just heard good things about them.
