 Information on Giglio Oboe
Author: juanster

I found an oboe online for sale that I am not familiar with. The bell and both joints are marked "Giglio" in large script and then "Pare'-Como" in block letters underneath. Is anyone familiar with this brand? Is it a stencil? This particular instrument is full conservatory, no 3rd octave or Bb resonance. The instrument has serial numbers but unfortunately they weren't photographed or provided. Also, did not find it listed on oboe.us. Thanks!

Could be a Bulgheroni stencil as they're made in Como, but that's just a wild guess. Can you post any photos of it?

Looks like a Prestini or Orsi oboe.

Chris,

Wouldn't a Prestini oboe have the Prestini key system? There is no left thumb B key on this oboe. I don't know enough about Prestini to know if all their oboes had this system.

They made basic thumbplate system oboes for several UK companies such as Howarth (B and C models), Selmer London (Sterling/Console), Buisson, Rudall-Carte/Louis LM5 (B&H) and others (loads of them in one form or other are still being used and sold on eBay).

There was a La Margue or La Marque oboe being mentioned on here a while back which was from the same company in Italy which was standard conservatoire, so they couldn't only produce Prestini systems as that's such a small and local market.

Chris,

I was able to finally solve my own mystery, thanks to some posts on some sax websites. In a nutshell Giglio was a firm owned by 3 principals, two of them being Santoni and Bulgheroni. The Bulgheronis left to form their own firm. Here is a post from thesax.info:

Alfredo Santoni, Fabio Somaini and Luigi Bulgheroni were the principals in the Ditta Giglio (“Lily Company”) in the city of Parè, in the province of Como, in the Lombardy region of Italy (you can get a brief on the area at http://en.db-city.com). The company was founded in 1947, closed in 1974 and passed into receivership in 1976.

Bulgheroni’s portion of the business was passed on to his sons, Giacomo and Sergio, and they formed F.lli Bulgheroni S.n.c in 1974. A company in Fabio Somaini’s name still exists, but it’s essentially an instrument repair shop. It does look like the Santoni nameplate survived the 1976 receivership and/or Santoni or one of his family continued with some woodwind manufacture for a few years, but data on this is a tad sketchy.

Ditta Giglio started with only three workers in 1947 and increased to 70 in the 1970s. At that time, they were producing 1200 instruments per month, primarily because they were one of the few companies to have automated equipment that could make woodwind instruments, as opposed to 100% handmade.

Here is another post I found on saxontheweb.net where the author wrote to Bulgheroni and received this reply:

Von: "F.lli Bulgheroni" <info@bulgheroni.it>

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luigi Bulgheroni was one of the Ditta Giglio co-owner, like Alfredo Santoni.
At the end of ' 60 years Luigi left the Ditta Giglio to begin his own business in the wooden instruments, follow some years later from his
sons Giacomo and Sergio.
The ditta Giglio closed in the 1975 and A. Santoni was the last owner.
Concerning the Malerne Paris, the ditta Giglio has supplied the instruments to them.

As far as I know, the ubiquitous "La Marque" (or erroneously "La Margus," or "La Margue" or "La Marge") were made by Malerne and Santoni. "La Marque" oboes feature "clunky" key-work whether by Malerne of Santoni.
It is also possible that some fake Jarde' oboes were made by Santoni.
