so i've picked up the oboe again after nearly 20 years. my embochure is correct but still weak. my question is -- should i play every day, or go every other day to give the muscles time to build back up?

I would suggest working in short periods each day..say no more than 10-15 minutes say twice to three times a day..then increase it slowly..Long notes will help but may blow your lip quicker so don't push it too soon..Slow and steady, little and often will soon have you back on your feet so to speak.

I recently did the same thing. By the way, most of my family lives in Austin and we just moved from there a couple of years ago. So many music opportunities in Austin! If you played many years when when you were young--I played continually from the time I was 10 to 18, and then for a couple of years when I was 28, you will be surprised at how fast your endurance will come back. I started playing again last August and now I can play 2 or 3 hours a day without a problem. I'm also playing in a ww quintet and band through the local college, in a community band and in a church group. I'm taking lessons from a professional player from the local symphony. I'd say that you should just play as long as you can keep your intonation even and your lip doesn't literally give out. In about a month you'll find that you can play at least an hour. Enjoy!

Take your time. I have been re-learning oboe for a little over a year after a long break. I played for a few years in jr/sr high school and quit in the late 90's, to take it up again in 2011. At first I played 3 or 4 days a week for 30 mins a day until my face got used to the embouchure again. Now I play almost every day for as long as I can get away with.

My muscle memory isn't what it used to be, nor reflexes. It takes time, and I still have a long way to go. Since I was self-taught I also had the whole idea of oboe playing wrong so re-learning the right way with lessons has been a challenge. But now it's really fun because playing is mainly for personal enrichment, with no pressure and no major "when I grow up" aspirations.
