The only problem being that there is nothing else to blame for my own shortcomings.

Nice Song.

Thanks Drew.

Oboe will always be my main instrument, but I am loving getting to know the flute better after all these years.

I actually had some great flute teachers but could not manage the the proper relaxation of embouchure, etc. due to oboe tensions. It is finally, happily, starting to work.

And the funny thing is it is also spilling some relaxation back to the oboe. That is a very good thing!

I thought this was going to be a problem with my flute playing as well when I started oboe, but luckily, it not been a concern at all. On the contrary, Mr. Schneider (my instructor, studied with Mack) makes reeds on the sharp side, and I'm forced to play them down to pitch. The result is no lip tension, just a slight rolling of the lips in. Also, since there is no tension, the transition from oboe to flute is made easier, and the tone hasn't suffered.

Some food for thought, it's working beautifully for me.

Yes, no reeds make the flute easy, BUT...
from an orchestral point of view--flute parts often require FAR more ink to print than oboe parts...much more black on the page. I'm a former flutist myself, and still noodle around if needed. But--At orchestra rehearsal, sitting there with my oboe, I often look over at the principal flute's parts (she sits just to my right) and quip "I'm sure glad I'm NOT playing flute!"

Oboefully,
Deb

Adorable!

Craig, you are possibly the best flute doubler (i.e. mainly reeds) I have heard - and I am a pro flautist! :)

I am a flute player first and an everything else second (I call oboe my 'primary double'). I am very glad it is that way around! Like Drew says, there is nothing else to change or blame on those days where you just sound not as good as yesterday (you can't just take your dry, cracked lips off and replace them!), but on flute I have more good lip days than oboe good reed days!

I would take double the amount of ink on the page over stressing over ppp low register or solos where you are expected not to breathe, if we are talking professional settings. Having said that, as an amateur, I prefer playing oboe in orchestra over flute - unless it is a particularly flute-y work, there are a ton of rests, and if you play 2nd, no one even knows you're there! Orchestral oboe parts are much nicer and less sporadic, in my humble opinion.

Happy fluting!

Rachel

Thank you Rachel, you are very kind.

I do love playing flute and prolly that more than my actual playing shows through a bit.

Oboe is and will always be my main thing, but I am seriously loving the flute these days.

Seriously loving it.

My neighbors may not be as impressed with it as am I, I'd guess. But they do get to hear lots of it.
