 Baroque Oboe purchase
Author: Oboe Period
Date:   2012-09-05 04:20

Hello all.

I am very interested in learning to play the baroque oboe.

And I would be very grateful if folks could direct me to a trustworthy place of business where I can purchase one. Most likely second hand.

I work in Manhattan, and live on Long Island, but I would be willing to travel a bit if I needed to.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Marc

I think usedoboes.com has one for sale; I've purchased from Marti in the past, but I don't know how she appraises her instruments.

I would try the Von Huene workshop in Boston. Though they make flutes they sell all types of early instruments- sometimes they have used baroque oboes. Joel Robinson makes the Saxon/Steve Hammer oboe - I believe he is in NYC ( I own an old Saxon model he made). Joel makes them new but may know of used ones for sale in NYC. You might also go to hautboy.org and email Steve Hammer directly and see if he knows of any for sale. You might even call Julliard..the amazing Gonzalo Ruiz teaches there.

i would think you are in a good location to find one in NYC

Best of luck from one Marc to another Marc

The biggest thing you need to know is that you need to purchase one where someone is either 1. still making them or 2. has the original reamers. Baroque oboes warp over time as they are usually made with boxwood or another softer wood and they constantly need to be re-reamed to keep the bore true. Don't get suckered into purchasing a "used baroque oboe" where there are no longer reamers available. Your best bet is probably Sand Dalton.

Contact Von Huene, Sand Dalton and Monk Workshops to see if they can send instruments to you on approval.

The problem with Baroque oboe reeds is they're not always a standard fit and some come with a staple that fits in the instrument then another shorter staple the reed is mounted on goes over that (like a d'amore/cor reed). You can wind more thread around the staple if it isn't a good fit in the top of the oboe which hasn't got a parallel sided reed socket as we know, but a reverse taper at the top of the bore into which the reed is fitted.

I've got a boxwood Dirk Kloeffer and also an artificial ivory Roessler baroque oboe, but the Roessler requires the double staple affair as the reed well is so wide. For a while I was playing my Baroque d'amore along with the side drummer but it wasn't loud enough to be heard over a distance and also tiring to play for long periods, so I switched to a 6-key Eb piccolo to cut through better.

Is there a comprehensive list of current Baroque oboe makers currently in business? The lists I have found don't show anywhere near as many as I thought.

Joel Robinson's workshop has ~1 year waiting list now. The Saxon was recommended to me. Might be useful that there is an accompanying staple and also shapers (by Stephen Hammer) for it.

Yup, staples and cane shape is something that you have to sort out since there isn't a standard. I'm sort of in that conundrum now. IMHO, 2-piece staples are a pain in the butt as the bottom end always gets stuck in the instrument. I bought a random 1-piece for experimentation but it is extremely different from the 2-piece so I've been crimping and doing all sort of things to it. If you buy an oboe, make sure you get a staple or two that was designed for the instrument, else you might never get a decent sound out of it. Find a teacher, which may not be too difficult in your area. Lots of concepts are OPPOSITE that of modern oboe.

As Baroque oboes don't have the luxury of 8ve keys, you do have to be sure your reeds are very responsive to the differences in breath pressure and also experiment with fingerings that work best in the upper register.

Wow. Robert HubBARD just posted something about Stephen BARD and Stephen Hammer, whose email address is @BARD. I sense a conspiracy!

I didn't realise at the time this was originally aired that the oboist (Molly Marsh) is playing a Baroque pitch oboe while the orchestra are playing at 440Hz - so she's playing this section of Vivaldi's Gloria in Db Major!

I struggle with Db Major on a modern oboe at the best of times - definitely wouldn't want to tackle that on a Baroque oboe, so hats off to her for making it look so effortless!

Ah, Mike, you busted me! <grin!>

Actually there is a connection, though. I am making baroque oboe shaper tips of Stephen Bard's design for him to sell and tips of Stephen Hammer's design for sale through Westwind. And there is a Hammer-designed Classical oboe shaper tip in the prototype stage as well...
