Christopher Redgate who I believe came up with this redesigned Oboe is a highly regarded player in Europe and works both teaching and playing especially in the Contemporary field. I don't know much about him other than his work at the Royal Academy (or was it the Royal College)..He is a boundary pusher and this redesign comes as no great surprise inasmuch that it was he who was behind it. This is right up his street.

I cannot comment on the Sax/Oboe I have no knowledge of them but I do wonder if this 21st century Oboe will ever really take off it does seem very excessive and really only for very advanced players who may or may not like it..its hardly production line material and will be made on request I suspect if it goes into production at all..

Its an interesting daliance for those who are technically minded but I wonder if this is a case of somone grabbing an idea and shaking it to death without thinking about who will comission one..I'm a bit lost as to what the intention is with this Oboe, is there hope it will become "the new thing" or is it purely a techincal experiment..I honestly couldnt say..There seems to be no direction as to where to take it from here, Howarths aren't marketing it from what I can see so does it go into production or does it remain a collectors piece..Hecklemaniac would you collect one?

It's bloody clever though..though is it necessary? Mind you Howarths got behind the idea so there must be something in it..I cannot imagine that the powers that be at Howarths (Nigel and Jeremy) would have ventured into this lightly or if they were simply commissioned to make it for Christopher and his sponsors/partners. If he (Christopher) drops by this board I for one would be very interested to hear about what his thoughts are with regard as to where it goes from here so to speak. There is nothing wrong with a spot of redesigning but are they over egging the custard..?

Andrew
