Music for me is similar to eating a delicious meal. Different sensations, of course, but composed of varying clusters of sensations that I could name if I needed to (chicken, rosemary, mashed potatoes & gravy, minor, major, deceptive cadence, tuba and piccolos in unison) but choose to experience as they flow through time rather than analyze.
If the music has a strong deliberate story line like opera, tone poems and the like then the story line will be, for me, a strong overlay on that sequence of sensations, but for me, the music needs to unfold in real time.
That's just me! Anything you visualize that furthers your interpretation is a useful approach. There are as many versions of the Mozart as there are performers, so just play what you know to be right and it will be a great performance.
