Robin,
You raise a couple more interesting points...
Deep breathing prior to playing. I almost always workout before hitting the oboe for the day. And the breathing seems full and easy.
On the 1 day a week I don't workout, my warmup takes longer and I notice what you describe about constrained breath. So perhaps, a few jumping jacks or time on the exercise bike on Sunday before oboe now on.
Akin to that, if I happen to practice flute before oboe, my wind is really there, and even the tonguing seems lighter and more responsive.
I am with you on the both hands on the wheel (these days), and once had to explain to a state trooper how I was driving my car while playing the flute.
Fortunately, he had a sense of humor and I got off with a warning. But, I also used to practice oboe in the car while parked. Used some play-along tapes I made and really practiced. Back seat worked best.
