Chris, I also use the stand with instruments against shoulder, and have never had a problem. I have a Hercules triple stand which has a nice strong base.

On That Auction Site, you can buy (well last time I checked) cases for assembled clarinets and also straight soprano sax cases. I don't know what the lengths in comparison of these assembled instruments are, but for the purposes of transport within a building, it could be worth a shot.
